The African Indian Ocean (AFI) Aviation Week Conference will be held in Nairobi for the first time ever from 21st-25th August 2023.
The decision to hold the 8th conference in Nairobi follows the signing of an MoU between the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Kenya Government on Tuesday July 11.
The ceremony was held at the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Headquarters where ICAO ESAF Regional Director Ms Lucy Mbugua representated the organisation’s Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar.
The MOU for the hosting of the 8th AFI Aviation Week Conference in Nairobi signifies the strong partnership and commitment between the Kenya Government and ICAO,” Lucy Mbugua, ICAO ESAF Regional Director.
The conference usually brings together key stakeholders in the aviation sector from across the African continent and beyond providing a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
ICAO on its part provides technical assistance, capacity-building programs, and guidance to support implementation of international aviation standards and best practices.
Discussions are based on cooperation and addressing in the aviation industry especially areas of safety, security, facilitation, and sustainability of air transport in Africa.
Connectivity between African cities remains one of the biggest challenges with prices of flying sometimes being 10 times higher than same distances in Europe.
Also, African airlines remain poor performers at international awards such as the Skytrax Aviation Awards.
Director-General KCAA Emile Arao emphasized the government of Kenya’s support shown through sponsoring the AFI Aviation Week Conference.
Qatar Airlines and Emirates Airline shave also shown their support for the event.
