Kenya is second best in airport security according the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), just behind South Africa.
In a statement released in Nairobi on Saturday July 30, 2022 the UN aviation body said that the country attained the highest regional sustainability indicator in aviation security following an audit in May.
Kenya scored of 91.7 percent, a four-points improvement from 88 percent in 2015. The score is based on the implementation of critical elements of an aviation system.
“This is a historic feat for Kenya as she has managed to accomplish the target set by ICAO in the current Global Aviation Security Plan that desired all of the states to attain an effective implementation of above 90 percent by 2030,” said KCAA.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said this was the highest ever score recorded in East and Central Africa.
Kenya has two main international airports namely the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and the Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Other international airports are in the city of Eldoret and Kisumu City, both in the western part towards Uganda border.
The security audit gives confidence in safety to passengers, crew, ground personnel, and the public at airports.
The recognition comes on the back of the Time Magazine vote that ranked Nairobi among the top 50 cities in the world.
